CCF - Exercise Christmas Cracker 2025
On Sunday 30 November, a joint team of cadets from Chichester High School and Chichester Free School took part in Exercise Christmas Cracker 25, a ‘National Radio Net’ High Frequency (HF) radio competition - with teams from the ACF, CCF and RAFAC. The aim was simple but challenging: make contact with as many stations across the United Kingdom as possible over a 6-hour period, using HF communications from each team’s home location.
Preparations began early, with cadets and staff setting up their station on the CHS playing fields. Our team successfully erected two 12-metre masts and operated the PRC-720 radio with skill and determination. Conditions throughout the day were tough, with fluctuating propagation making communication unpredictable, but this only added to the challenge. For some of our team, it was their first real experience of HF radio - and they rose to the occasion brilliantly.
Throughout the day, contacts were made across the country, including our furthest confirmed contact on the East Coast of Yorkshire. Points were awarded based on both the number of successful contacts and the distances achieved. By the close of the competition at 1500 hrs, the Chichester team had secured the highest overall score, including a total of 13252km ‘air miles’.
We are proud to announce that our joint team achieved first place in the competition!
The day was enjoyed by all involved, providing an extended opportunity for our cadets to develop practical radio skills, understand the nuances of HF communication, and experience the teamwork required to run an effective field station.
A huge well done to all cadets and staff who took part - an outstanding effort and a fantastic achievement for our CCFs!
